Questionmark Case Study

Forest Service engineers web-based certification exams by Questionmark

Scenario

Forest Service engineers have switched to web-based certification exams. Pilot tests in Oregon, Washington, and Alaska were so successful that computerized exams using QuestionMark Perception were implemented throughout the Forest Service, which operates in the 48 continental states, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. Although some employees continue to paper-based tests, most have adapted well to this new method of test taking.

Using Perception
The exams are presented on the Forest Service intranet using a secure browser that hides the IP address, directly connects with the exam server, prevents access to the menu bar, disables function keys, and cleans the cache and history upon exit. Some candidates go to a computer lab; some take them from their desks. In converting to web-based exams, Engineering has significantly reduced the cost of printing, mailing, and scheduling.

In addition, with the ability to link an Access records database to Perception's answers database, the overall savings in cost and time is dramatic.

Results
The Engineering department of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Service provides technical services to assist in the management of more than 150 National Forests and about 200 million acres of forests, lakes, mountains, and grasslands.
